SCLA Game Cancellation Notification – May 4 and 5
The fires now present a health and safety issue for our players. All SCLA Boys and Girls Youth games scheduled for May 4,5 including the U9 Jamboree are canceled.
A Smoke Advisory (see below) has been issued for Ventura County for Sat/Sun May 4,5 and the CRPD has closed all fields. The Springs fire not laying down and two new fires (Glendale and Eagle Rock) have just erupted. Homes in Chevy Chase Canyon are being evacuated. This is now a health and safety issue for our players.
There will likely be volunteer opportunities for our Southern California Lacrosse Association players to help out at evacuation centers and to check in on elderly residents, friends and neighbors in the severely impacted fire/smoke zones. Because we are so late in the season it is highly unlikely that this weekend’s games or the U9 Jamboree will be rescheduled. Next week your teams can prepare for the final weekend of the regular season and the upcoming playoffs which begin the week of May 13.
Thank you for your understanding.
Smoke Advisory for Fri & Sat, May 3 & 4.
The Springs wildfire continues to burn in Ventura County with smoke impacts currently limited to the areas closest to or downwind from the fire. Santa Ana winds are expected to diminish today and will be replaced with on-shore winds blowing from the ocean to inland areas. There will be potential for areas of the county, previously not affected, to experience smoke impacts when the winds shift. The potential will be highest for areas to the north and east of the fire or the fire plume. In areas affected by smoke, air quality may reach Unhealthy or higher levels and everyone is urged to exercise caution and avoid vigorous outdoor or indoor exertion. People with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children should remain indoors. Keep windows and doors closed unless it is extremely hot inside. In these cases, seek alternate shelter. Run your air conditioner if you have one. Keep the fresh air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent bringing additional dust, smoke, and/or ash inside.
Mourning the Loss of Phil Marinelli
The Conejo Valley lacrosse community lost one its biggest supporters on Wednesday when Phil Marinelli passed away. Phil has been involved in the Southern California Lacrosse Association (SCLA) from the time when all the local high schools were still club teams. He was also instrumental in bringing the youth program under the SCLA umbrella and leading the incredible growth that has occurred in youth lacrosse in the Conejo Valley. He has been the steady guiding hand for the Newbury Park High School lacrosse program during its transition from to a top club program in the state to a quality CIF program in the Marmonte League. He is survived by his wife, Jo, and three sons. Mike is currently the goalie for NPHS and Will is the coach of the Westlake JV lacrosse program. Our deepest condolences to the entire Marinelli family and NP lacrosse family.
